IT WOULD BE BETTER TO BE SOMEONE ELSE - THE FILMIC MUSINGS OF VOLKER SCHLÖNDORFF A film by Peter Buchka
Volker Schlöndorff sees himself as the skilled carpenter of German independent filmmakers. Almost all his films have been literary adaptations, from his first theatrical release, based on novels such as Young Torless by Robert Musil, Lost Honor of Katharina Blum by Heinrich Böll, The Tin Drum by Günther Grass (for which he received an Oscar) as well as his more recent films. In four chapters, titled The Carpenter as Author, Rebellion of the Respectable, Battling Couples and The Museum of Dreams, Peter Buchka explores the themes and styles of Schlöndorff’s work. Illustrated with numerous film excerpts, the result is a truly insightful look at Schlöndorff’s work and his highly personalized worldview.
