Reinhard Hauff, born 1939 in Marburg, made his first TV film ("The Revolt") in 1968/69. The production year and the title announce a programme that Hauff has kept up with few exceptions: the critical preoccupation with Germany’s present – which for him always means going back into the past. In contrast to Alexander Kluge, who intellectually dissects this German reality and tries to decode ts hidden language, Hauff shows an immediate feeling of involvement, of identification with as an enlightened moralist. He is sceptical of ideologies and dogmas and attempts as unspectacularly as possible to develop ideas and attitudes for what might be called a kind of "natural" decency. His protagonists are generally average people who are forced out of their natural, comfortable state by some sudden, decisive event which causes them to tart the rebel against it. In the event which causes them to start to rebel against it. In the process they develop a remarkable amount of civic courage.
