He has been described in the press as having a special mix of seductive gentleness, intelligence and machismo "that can transfom him into an unexpectedly destructive bullet". A judgement the cool Cuban-American star rejects outright, just like almost everything that is said about him. Born in Havana in 1956 and forced to flee to Miami from Fidel Castro’s revolution as a child, Andy Garcia does indeed tend to play gangsters (as in Coppola’s famous mafia drama, The Godfather III), police officers (Desperate Measures), FBI agents (The Untouchables) and other such ‚heroes‘. Nevertheless, Garcia refuses to be typecast, regardless of how much money is involved.
"Your subconscious carries with it everything you’ve ever done in your life and everything that you feel in your life. Even though you might not be aware of it. I think in acting you have to tap into the subconscious and how the character relates to your own personal experiences."
